A Legend Is Born

A long long time ago, as goes in ancient Roman mythology, Zeus met a mortal woman named Alceme and together they gave birth to the famous half god Hercules.

Zeus, with a strong desire to enhance the divine nature of his son, traitorously drugged his wife the goddess Hera. Once Hera found herself deep asleep, Zeus placed his son Hercules at her breast to let him feed himself with divine milk.

When the goddess Hera woke up from her sleep, and saw Hercules feeding himself at her breast, she through him away violently. In this action, some of Hera's milk gushed across heaven forming what we know today as the milky way. As for the drops of her milk that fell down onto earth, they then sprang into beautiful lilies.

These flowers became the center of attention for most of the mortals, and thus Venus the goddess of beauty began to feel threatened by this flower and cast a curse upon it. This is how a huge and heavy pistil suddenly started to sprang from the lily's center.

This is how the Calla Lilies are born.

Giving A Calla Lily

Now in our real world away from the gods and goddess of ancient mythology, back into the 19th century, at a time when social ethic was such that it was very difficult to express your feelings with words to one another, giving flowers to convey a message was the best medium.

Each flower (as we know by now) depending on its color or arrangement used to carry a specific meaning. The Calla Lily due to its resemblance to a female genitalia was then used to express feelings of lust and sexual desire.

As time passed, the Calla Lily became a symbol of purity, holiness and faith. Therefore the Calla Lilies will build up a special feeling of devotion and purity during a wedding ceremony and this is why they are often seen coupled with roses during such events.

What better way to commemorate a flower with such a rich history than giving it eternal life as an origami flower? Truly, giving an origami Calla Lily will be best suited to any event celebrating birth a rebirth (in a physical or spiritual way).

Now that being said, an origami Calla Lily will always be welcome as a gift regardless of the time or situation as their beauty is appreciated by all!
